QUERETARO, Mexico – Alberta athletes aided Canada in the cleaned up at the 2012 Pan Am trampoline and tumbling championships on Sunday winning four of six individual event titles while piling up a total of 12 medals on the day.
Kyle Soehn of Red Deer, Alta., led the charge for the men’s team winning gold in both individual trampoline and, with younger brother Keegan, in the synchro event.
“I knew coming to this meet there was a good chance to place in the top three and even win the individual event,” said Soehn.
“I was particularly pleased with being able to keep up a good rhythm in the final so that I could maintain my height and form throughout the entire routine.”
In double mini trampoline, the Canadian team swept gold in the men’s and women’s individual and team events.
Veteran Denis Vachon of Burlington, Ont., gearing up for a run at the men’s world title in 2013, scored highest on both of his passes in the final to edge Lucas Adorno of Argentina for the gold.
Newcomer Ryan Sheehan of Edmonton took the bronze.
In the team event Sheehan, Keegan and Vachon coasted to victory ahead of Brazil and Argentina.
On the women’s side 2010 world champion Corissa Boychuk of Airdrie, Alta., romped to the gold medal in her first international competition in more than a year.
“I spent most of the year working on the mental side of the sport,” said Boychuk. “I do have some bigger skills coming but wasn’t quite ready yet to use them here. I just wanted to come here and have some fun and I really did.”
Gillian Bruce from the Calgary Gymnastics Centre finished eighth.
Boychuk, competing with Bruce and Pamela Kriangkum from the Phoenix Gymnastics combined to win more gold in the team competition.
