Due to the Government of Alberta’s ban on all events exceeding 250 people, the Alberta Gymnastics Federation (AGF) is cancelling all AGF sanctioned events between now and April 6th. AGF will continue to monitor the situation daily to determine if events after April 6th need to be cancelled or if alternate arrangements can be made without compromising the safety of our members while in compliance with government requirements.
The risk of contracting COVID-19 in Alberta remains low. Events under 250 people that do not involve international attendees, high-risk populations, and critical infrastructure staff are still allowable. However, AGF is recommending that all AGF member clubs cancel any invitationals between now and April 6th, regardless of size.
Studies are showing that the public is growing more cautious and avoiding unnecessary public gatherings. Venues are also shutting down which is making it logistically unfeasible to amend plans for some events that would keep them in compliance with government requirements. There is now a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the AGF community which has led to a voluntary gym closure and members having to go into self-isolation.
AGF recognizes that event cancellations will have various financial and personal implications on individual members, member clubs, and provincial and national sporting organizations. For now, AGF has been informed that insurance companies, including Toole Peet, do not cover business interruptions related to pandemics. AGF clubs are encouraged to contact their secondary insurance provider with additional questions.
Event Cancellations Effective Today
AGF will determine whether alternate arrangements can be made for cancelled events as we continue to monitor the constantly evolving COVID-19 situation. The following AGF sanctioned events are being cancelled in response to Alberta’s ban:
- Jurassic Classic / UCIC | March 19 – 22, 2020
- Northern Zones / Trials to Westerns for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics | March 27 – 28, 2020
- Southern Zones for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics | April 4, 2020
- T&T 3rd Cup | April 3 – 5, 2020
- Acrobatic Provincial Championships | April 4 – 5, 2020
AGF is closely examining the cost and logistical implications for various events.
Participation in all activities, including events, is voluntary and up to the discretion of our members. The decision to keep gymnastics facilities open is also up to the discretion of our member clubs so long as clubs comply with Alberta’s ban and requirements.
AGF will continue to update the community via email with major events as they unfold and on the AGF COVID-19 Updates webpage. Again, we thank you for your patience, respect and understanding as we collectively continue to adapt to this ever-changing and unfortunate situation and explore ways to mitigate the impact on our community.
