Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
March 9, 2020
The Alberta Gymnastics Federation (AGF) is closely monitoring the development and spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). There are currently 7 presumptive cases in our province and the risk of contracting the virus remains low in Alberta and across Canada. As such, there has not been a need to alter any planning for provincial or national competitions. Should anything change, AGF member clubs will be notified immediately.
Impact on Alberta Athletes
Currently, the only event cancellation affecting Alberta athletes is that of the Arctic Winter Games which were set to take place in Whitehorse from March 15 - 21. The event was cancelled this past Saturday upon recommendation from Yukon's acting Chief Medical Officer of Health. The event would have drawn about 2,000 athletes from around the world.
Impact on International Competition and Travel
GymCan has strongly recommended refraining from international travel to countries that have been identified as having high outbreaks of the coronavirus. The WAG Jesolo Cup in Italy has been cancelled and other events set to take place in countries identified as having high outbreaks are currently under review. Provided below is a detailed statement and update from GymCan.
While the risk of contracting coronavirus remains low, all AGF members are encouraged to take the usual precautionary measures associated with the cold and flu season. Below are some links to help you stay healthy and informed:
